Tokyu
Corporation's 5000 series EMU for commuter
use
Tokyu Corporation has started revenue service with 5000 series from May,
2002, in order to run from Tokyu Denentoshi line to Tobu Railway via
subway Hanzoumon line. One new railway network of metropolitan has been
debuted by this operation. Tokyu Corporation used to consider to replace
electric apparatus and to regenerate stainless steel car body in about
30 years. Moreover renewal vehicles may be used for 20 more years.
However considering diversification of passenger needs and a maintenance
cost, Tokyu Corporation concluded it appropriate to be replaced on the
standard in 30 years. As a result of study, Tokyu Corporation has taken
in 5000 series. 5000 series are based on the eisisted Tokyu
Corporation's 3000 series, because of light weight and maintenance cost.
The car body structure is the stainless steel lightweight body which
resembled East Japan Railway's E 231 series of the typical commuter rolling stock.
Its car head form was widely changed a lot in E 231 series, because of
Tokyu's originality. Of course, the signaling and security systems for
Tokyu, Subway and Tobu Railway are taken.
