E3 series

The Shinkansen type E3 (Super-Express "Komachi")
has debuted in 1997 as 2nd case of new operation
through into the Shinkansen and existing local line without transfer
like Yamagata Shinkansen type 400. "Komachi" means the Queen
of Akita-prefecture in Japanese. The local line section between Tazawako
line (from Morioka to Omagari, gauge was 1,067mm) and Oou line
(from Omagari to Akita) has been improved to the same gauge 1,435 mm
as the Shinkansen, since Shinkansen runs through into these lines.
Moreover, type E3 is coupled with type E2, and high-speed
operation of 275 km/hour is possible in the Shinkansen section as
Super-express "Hayate". By the way, type E2 is typical
size carbody, and type E3 is small size carbody. Therefore double
systems are taken in E3 (train security, electrical voltage and etc),
because of complying with smaller construction gauge in local line.
